A 45-minute drive from Staveley is the town of Coniston and Coniston Water, the inspiration behind Arthur Ransome's celebrated children's novel, Swallows and Amazons. It was also the site of Donald Campbell's doomed world water speed record attempts in 1967.
The walk from here is a tough one, 8.5 miles with 3500ft of ascent. Having climbed to The Old Man (2600ft), you then have fine ridge walking to Wetherlam brfore decending to habitation.
